Harvard Affirms What We Already Know!

Harvard Business Review
NOVEMBER 11, 2009

Women-Owned Firms Have
Huge Impact

U.S. businesses owned by women have an economic impact of $3 trillion annually. That translates into the creation or maintenance of 16% of all jobs in the country, according to the Center for Women's Business Research. If U.S.-based women-owned businesses were their own country, it would have the fifth-largest GDP in the world.

Well we could have told you that!

Just back from visiting our Boston colleague and had the real pleasure of being a guest lecturer at Emerson College. My good pal from Harvard Business School Press, Michelle Morgan invited me to come in and speak to her students about Hooks Book Events. Three hours later.. I had some new ideas for my business as well as few new booksellers to add to our growing Boston list.

Keep shopping with the ladies!

August, 2009 HBE Heads South for Four Days in 'BAMA!

Just back from a trip to Alabama .. Livingston, Eutaw, Demopolis, Birmingham and Bessemer to be specific! Have been down South researching a distant relative Miss Ruby Pickens Tartt, nationally renowned painter, writer and folklorist who collaborated with the WPA Federal Writers' Project and John Lomax during the Depression. Miss Ruby was a real wonder and has occupied a corner in my mind for some time now; so I thought I better head South to check it out. You can Google her to learn more about her recordings, writings and paintings.. she was ahead of her time and a real inspiration to many while she was alive and even now.

She would have been pleased that I took some pals from Birmingham to Bessemer on Saturday night to a bona fide juke joint, Gip's Place where I managed to meet Mr. Gipson (88 years cool - grave digger by day, bluesman by night) in his back yard singing and playing in his tin roofed shack. Music was blaring, bourbon was flowing, fish were frying and dancing was going on! Even good buddy and writer, Diane McWhorter made the scene as she was home in 'Bama working on her next book. You can find Gip on line.. he even has a MySpace page!

IN THE NEWS: Motley Fool.com features Hooks Book Events author Chris Anderson

MOTLEY FOOL.COM, July 17, 2009 — In an article entitled "A New Business Model for the Digital Age," posted today on the "Motley Fool Stock Advisor, reporter Jennifer Schonberger writes:

"Since 2002, David and Tom Gardner have returned 32.89% while the S&P 500 returned -8.78%. There is no question that traditional media is in disarray right now. Major news outlets from CBS (NYSE: CBS) to Gannett (NYSE: GCI) to The New York Times (NYSE: NYT) are being forced to transition to a different model because of the underlying economics of their mediums (in most cases, a digital model)."

"But transitions to digital by media and other types of companies have left many questioning what the magic formula for profits is. At a recent event sponsored by Hooks Books and The Motley Fool, Chris Anderson, editor of Wired magazine and author of the new book Free: The Future of a Radical Price, offered a solution to the conundrum."

July 7-HBE Helps Launch FREE with Chris Anderson

Chris Anderson (Wired's Editor-in-Chief) was in town last week to launch his new book FREE:The Future of a Radical Price. HBE was there selling the not so free version of the book at Google DC and at the Motley Fool HQ in Alexandria. As you might have heard or read, the book has stirred some controversy around the use of Wikipedia material and more importantly around the overall premise of the book as seen in Malcolm Gladwell's review in the New Yorker (www.newyorker.com)( HBE highly recommends your checking out Malcolm's review!) As booksellers we like the controversy which we hope will boost sales. Yes, you can download the material on line for "free" but if you get sucked into Chris' "freemium" concept and you want to buy the book, please do so from a good independent store near you. (PPH)

Hooks Book Events at sweetgreen with Bon Appetit's Barbara Fairchild

Wish you’d all been able to join us at sweetgreen on June 5th for the book signing party with Bon Appetit editor and cookbook author Barbara Fairchild. Sweetgreen’s owners and creators Jonathan Neman, Nicolas Jammet and Nathaniel Ru showed their entrepreneurial flair and social networking skills as 80 guests piled in to their restaurant for the two hour event! (Check out some great pics from the evening: sweetgreen.com/blog.)

Barbara (pictured here with my daughter, aspiring chef Kailin Otsuki) was besieged by the twenty-somethings who asked her advice on entertaining, purchasing kitchen equipment (“buy the best saucepans you can afford…”), to which are the best cuts of meat. She graciously answered each and every question, and posed for photographs with anyone who asked — including Kailin.

Parked out front was the Honest Tea van (Nic’s twin brother is the National Field Marketing Manager for that growing firm), as was the sweetflowmobile – sweetgreen’s new frozen yogurt truck. What’s so special about it, you ask? Well – it’s not a hybrid, but it is equipped with a pulley system that powers a generator. That generator then powers the yogurt making machine, and also keeps the engine idling (and so the engine does not use any gas!).

Stay tuned for more sweetgreen/HBE partnered events! — Loretta Yenson

May 28-31 Book Expo New York City!

Hooks Book Events staff is just back from a wonderful trip to New York to the annual Book Expo held this year at the Javits Center in NYC!

Imagine football fields back to back with filled books, books and more books. We arrived with our wonderful PR maven, Hope Gibbs of Inkadescent PR www.inkandescentpr.com who joined in the fun and chaos.

We brought our new “everyone needs one” book bags with the HBE logo this year. These zippered totes were all the rage with friends like Dan Pink and Jonathan Galassi, who quickly filled them with all the free books vendors were handing out.

We are home, feeling exhausted yet re-energzied about our love of the book, and the power of an idea and a good story. The hundreds of folks there from all over the world share this appreciation and we feel confident that regardless of the form these stories may take the concept of the book will live on.

Yes, the industry is changing. Yes, just like what we were hearing 10 years ago about the newspaper industry, it is possible that the book publishing world may be following suit.

But we also heard from some passionate editors and amazing writers whose new books we can not resist. So no matter what the future holds for this industry that we adore, we find it hard to imagine a world with no books to hold, to mark up, to lend, to return to share and to cherish.

So here’s to the book and to all the wonderful friends in our tribe who write them, edit them, package them, publicize them, sell them and read them! — Perry Pidgeon Hooks

May 19 — Lee Woodruff Joined us at the Four Seasons

Hooks Book Events produced its first salon at the Four Seasons Hotel in
Georgetown this past week with our new best friend, Lee Woodruff. The author and activist who supports the troops through her nonprofit organization www.remind.org" charmed us with readings from her new book "Perfectly Imperfect" and with stories about her life with her children and husband, ABC News reporter Bob Woodruff, who suffered a severe brain injury in 2006 while covering the War in Iraq. "He's my miracle man," she said.

Approximately 75 women and one brave guy showed up for a yummy lunch and lots of laughs about motherhood, kids, husbands and more. Lee ended her talk discussing their family foundation which is dedicated to supporting the recovery efforts of our wounded soldiers.

Hooks Book Events was pleased to donate proceeds from the lunch to Remind. Memorial Day weekend is a perfect time for all of us to pitch in any way possible. Please visit www.remind.org"to learn more about this important organization, and if you feel inspired we encourage you to donate today.

May 3, 2009 -Congratulations to HBE Friend, Robin Chase

Kudos to HBE friend, Robin Chase who was recently listed with 99 other amazing folks in the TIME 100 list! Robin and our own Loretta were at Wellesley together and you may remember that Robin founded ZipCar! She has been seen recently dashing around DC (on the metro of course) talking to folks about her innovative ideas to solve some of our energy and transportation issues. We hope to get her as a guest speaker.. so keep watching the site for more information.

We particularly liked this FAST FACT from the TIME article:
Chase's formula: 1. Identify a need 2. Build a platform to share and satisfy the need

April 30 — Bill Gates Sr., "Showing Up For Life"

Prominent lawyer, civil activist, and philanthropist William Gates Sr. spoke this afternoon at a Greater Washington Board of Trade event. The co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation talked about his new book, "Showing Up for Life: Thoughts on the gifts of a lifetime."

Co-written by Mary Ann Mackin, who provides speechwriting services to CEOs of foundations and corporations, the 185-page book is a heartfelt, deeply personal and shines a bright light on the values and principles that Gates learned growing up in the Great Depression.

Board of Trade president Jim Dinegar interviewed the author before a crowd of nearly 100 about what inspired him to write the book, and how his life and example as a business leader and philanthropist may have shaped the success of his son, Microsoft founder Bill Gates III.

"When I talk about the importance of 'showing up,' I am really explaining the philosophy that started with my parents and my wife's family — all of whom were great believers in participating in the community," Gates explained. "My wife, especially, knew the value of being involved and was very active in the United Way. I always loved that organization because the argument for it is so clean and strong. They ask people to join together to generate large sums of money, then turn it over to leaders in the community — the ones whom they trust the most — to use it for the greater good."

The Gates Foundation, he said, conducts business in a similar way. "When we first began, we had to decide what we wanted to support and ended up finding our way by deciding what we weren't going to do. Today, we try to help in areas that we know we can actually make a difference. Few things are a silver bullet, but vaccines — now that's a silver bullet! So one of our biggest programs is to bring vaccines to the people of poor countries that don't have access to health care."

Described as a glass-more-than-half-full person, Gates admitted to being an eternal optimist. "Over the years I've met legions of good people who go to work every day under difficult circumstances to reduce and eliminate poverty, improve health, enhance women's rights, and feed the hungry. My optimism for global progress is based on these people. I admit I probably have an undo level of optimism, and yet, I remain positive that things will improve for more and more around the world. After all, we're all in this together. That is the theme of my book, and the theme of my life."

When asked by an audience member whether he wakes up in the morning amazed at the incredible amount of wealth his son has accumulated — and the wealth he is able to distribute through the Gates Foundation — Gates Sr. said, "Yes! It is totally stunning and I'm very conscious of the stunningness of it. And yet, I exalt in it, because those billions are going to wonderful causes and bettering people's lives. I’m 83 years old and I never imagined that I’d be working this late in life, or enjoying it so much."

SAVE THE DATE! June 2

On June 2, 2009, Alan Webber and Dan Pink will be together in DC. Pink, the well-known author of "A Whole New Mind," will be interviewing Weber (the founder of Fast Company) about his new book "Rules of Thumb: 52 Truths for Winning at Business Without Losing Your Self." This will be another event with the Board of Trade. Details to follow soon.

April 28, 2009 — Washington Business Journal mention

In an article in today's Washington Business Journal entitled, "Some Pre-Mother's Day Wisdom," reporter Jennifer Nycz-Conner wrote, "If you ever have a chance to hear Cokie Roberts speak, take it."

We couldn't agree more! That's why we are booked her at the Greater Washington Board of Trade (she's pictured here with Board of Trade president Jim Dinegar) and are getting her into as many venues as possible. We're so glad Jennifer liked her presentation, and wrote such a fab piece in the prestigious Back Page section of the paper.

"Roberts spoke to a group of 80 or so WBJ's Women Who Mean Business alumna and guests of the Greater Washington Board of Trade last night at the House of Sweden," Nycz-Conner wrote. "She was there to talk about her book, the 10th anniversary edition of "We Are Our Mother's Daughters," but topics flung as widely as the tale of her mother cooking for an intimate gathering of 1,500 guests at Roberts wedding reception to the secrets of successful marriages (her husband of 43 years, journalist and GWU Professor Steve Roberts, says the way to gauge a marriage's success by "the number of teeth marks on your tongue"). The event was just a pleasant get-together all around - a beautiful venue, good food, great camaraderie and an insightful, down-to-earth, inspirational guest. A great way to spend a spring business evening."

April 27, 2009 — What's new this week

Hooks Book Events has another great week ahead with some very interesting events lined up. Bill Gates Sr. will be in town this week for two private events with us! He will be discussing his new book, Showing Up For Life-Thoughts on The Gifts of a Lifetime.

We are thrilled that our pal, Bill Brands is flying up for Texas for a special event at the Woodrow Wilson House in DC where we will have a house tour and a conversation with Bill on his 2003 biography, Woodrow Wilson, coauthored by the late and great Arthur Schlesinger. We are looking forward to seeing Bill again and we are hoping to get a new and better perspective on Wilson whose treatment of the American Suffragettes reminds us of the Taliban!

HBE will then dash to a private SALON with Cokie Roberts at our friend, Joy’s house. A tented tea party awaits for 150 women and we are thrilled to be with Cokie again. This time she will be discussing the revised, 10th Anniversary Edition of We Are Our Mother’s Daughters-a perfect gift for Mother’s Day. Cokie will then head to a private talk with the Washington Business Journal and the Board of Trade for an event with some amazing DC area women businesswomen.

Reminders: Lee Woodruff with be at the Four Seasons in Georgetown on May 19th! Tickets are still available so email us at tickets@hooksbookevents.com for more information or to reserve your spot. Remember, we will be donating a portion of the proceeds to www.remind.org!.

April 24, 2009 — Perry Hooks featured on "Inside Government" radio show

Hooks Book Events co-founder Perry Pidgeon Hooks was featured on today’s 10 a.m. radio broadcast of “Inside Government,” during a recap of this week’s Government Executive’s 2009 Excellence in Government Conference on www.federalnewsradio.com and 1500 AM in the Washington, D.C., area.

Hooks discussed her company’s role in connecting big thinkers with the federal government to tackle the most pressing issues. Case in point was the keynote speaker she brought to the April 20 Government Executive’s 2009 Excellence in Government Conference — the award-winning broadcaster Cokie Roberts, who discussed her latest book, “Ladies of Liberty: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation,” as well as President Obama’s initiative to increase public service.

“Cokie is an extraordinary woman who charmed the crowd with her wit, wisdom and incredible knowledge of our founding mothers who, interestingly, had quite a hand in keeping their men on task,” Hooks shares. “The comment that sticks in my mind is when Cokie explained how emotionally charged politics was back in the early 19th century and ‘the women were trying to get the men to put down their guns and pick up a glass of wine to discuss the issue at hand with civility.”

Hooks says she was honored to be interviewed on for the April 24 “Inside Government” broadcast, and looks forward to working with the radio station to bring more bestselling authors who are talking about issues that impact the federal government.

April 24, 2009 — Perry Pidgeon Hooks and Cokie Roberts featured on “Inside Government” radio show

On today's “Inside Government” radio show, reporter Jason Fornicola will interview Hooks Book Events co-founder PERRY HOOKS — and award-winning Journalist COKIE ROBERTS, who was the keynote speaker at this week's EXCELLENCE IN GOVERNMENT conference.

The show will air on Friday, April 24 at 10 a.m. EDT nationwide on Federal News Radio at www.federalnewsradio.com and 1500 AM in the Washington, D.C., area.

Hooks Book Events helped bring Cokie Roberts to the event to talk about her new book, “Ladies of Liberty: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation,” as well as President Obama’s initiative to increase public service. Indeed, Roberts impressed the crowd of several hundreds government executives with her wit and words. "President Obama wants to make government cool again," she said. "Do you all feel cool today?"

She went on to share her knowledge and depth of understanding of the nation's founding women — and charmed them with stories about her own mother. "In the early 19th century, mean in politics were literally killing each other in the name of their beliefs," she explained. "The women of the time were trying desperately to get them to put down their guns and pick up a glass of wine so they could, in a relaxed moment, discuss their differences."

These women — from Alexander Hamilton's wife Aliza to John Quincy Adams' wife Louisa, to the nation's darling Dolly Madison — kept tempers cool and showed the nation what it meant to be a first lady. "It's a total myth that the first ladies were sitting around pouring tea until Eleanor Roosevelt came along, then poured more tea until Hilary Clinton took the political stage," Roberts insisted. "These women were tough, smart, and incredibly clever."

What would the founding mothers say to us today? "They'd look us square in the eye and say, 'Honey relax, you got it easy," Roberts believes. "The truth of the matter is that this is so true. We are not pregnant every year. Typhoid hasn't just come through town and killed two of our children. We are not making candles and bread before we prepare the evening meal. I think this perspective is wonderful because it's true: We have it easy."

Further, the concept of "multitasking" is something Roberts says, "is a man's made-up word for something women have done since the beginning of time." She points to her own mother — former ambassador and long-time Democratic Congresswoman from Louisiana Lindy Boggs — who first took office in 1973 after the death of her husband (the late Hale Boggs, who was Majority Leader of the House of Representatives) from a plane crash.

"I remember coming home one day and my mother was standing in her big kitchen cooking a grand meal and stirring pickles that she'd made from her giant vegetable garden. In one arm was my nephew, who was fussing and needed to be constantly rocked from side to side, and under her neck she'd cricked the phone and was dictating a speech she was to give the following day to Congress. All the while she was monitoring the chicken in the oven and stirring those pickles. I said aloud, 'Mom, not only CAN you do it all — you can do it all AT THE SAME TIME."

LISTEN TO COKIE ROBERTS TALK ABOUT HER BOOK, "Ladies of Liberty," log on to Federal News Radio at www.federalnewsradio.com. April 18, 2009 — Perry Hooks on panel of Women Interested in Networking (WIN)

Pictured left to right: Perry Pidgeon Hooks, Hooks Book Events with Robyn Small, director of WIN, and new member Reena Kazmann, director of www.eco-artware.com/. Photo by Anna Gibbs.

What's the key to being a great entrepreneur? At today's networking event for Women Interested in Networking (WIN) at the Cheesecake Factory in Bethesda, Hooks Book Events co-owner Perry Pidgeon Hooks shared her secrets to success with the room filled with women business owners.

"You have to believe in your business concept, and you have to believe in yourself," Perry insisted.

She also advised the entrepreneurs to know their core strengths — and hire an expert to do what they can't.

"The biggest mistake that some entrepreneurs make is to try and do everything themselves," she said. "Many times it's because you don't want to spend money. But that can be a huge error. Don't be afraid to ask for help, and don't think you can do it alone. You can't build a big business all by yourself. Just focus on what you do best, and outsource the other stuff. You'll be glad you did."

Other panelists offered this words of entrepreneurial wisdom:

• Kim Oser, Certified Professional Organizer and founder, Put It Away! — "Be confident about what you are doing, and know your rate — then stick to it. If you don't value what you do, no one else will."

• Janet Terry, Founder, Olney Farmers' Market — "Be patient and have a good attitude. You need to love what you do, and others will share your passion and help bring your ideas to fruition."

• Denise Bump, CRPC®, Senior Financial Advisor, Ameriprise Financial — "Definitely have passion, but also have a solid business plan. You need to know how you are going to make money before you start a business, and then use that plan to track your success as you grow. I also advise my clients to look at their business plan every year and revamp it. It keeps them on track."

• Nycci Safier Nellis, Founder & Publisher, TheListAreYouOnIt.com. — "I never had a business plan, and five years into my business I don't plan to write one now. I wing it, and so far I have been successful. Here's what I learned: Even if others don't believe in your concept, if you do, then you should go for it and give it your all. I had several people tell me that no one cared about having a food and wine list to know where to eat in DC. I disagreed because I was the customer who was looking for The List, so it was ultimately people like me that I was trying to please. Today, I not only have a successful business but a radio show with my husband David called, "Dishing It Out" (at 11 a.m. on Sunday on Federal News Radio. We're having a ball."

A special invitation for you — May 19: Lunch with author Lee Woodruff at the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown

It's official! We are going to be hosting fabulous events at The Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown.

Our first event will be a luncheon on May 19 from noon to 1:30 with journalist Lee Woodruff, author of Perfectly Imperfect.

Lee is the life and family contributor for ABC's Good Morning America and a freelance writer. You'll remember that Lee's husband, Bob Woodruff, is the TV journalist who was co-anchor of the ABC News and appeared on World News Tonight and was nearly killed in 2006 by a roadside bomb in Iraq.

Soon after, she and Bob started the Bob Woodruff Family Foundation: Remind.org, a nonprofit organization that provides critical resources and support to our nation's injured service members, veterans, and their families, especially those affected by the signature hidden injuries of war: traumatic brain injury and combat stress.

"You can tell a woman's whole life story from the possessions in her jewelry box," she writes in her new book. "Like reading a palm, you can trace the points where her life has intersected with memorable events, people, places, and loves. You can speculate on the essence of her personality, all from what she has accumulated in that box."

Tickets are $70, which includes a four-course lunch and a signed copy of Lee's new book. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Remind.org.

A limited number of seats are available. To buy your ticket send an email to: tickets@hooksbookevents.com.

April 1, 2009 — Keeping up with Dexter Filkins and "The Forever War"

We checked in today with Dexter Filkins who was in Rome, en route to Kabul, to see how the young Afghan women were doing in the Marwais School. Dexter has raised more than $22,000 (up from $8,000) to help the girls recover from the Taliban attack and to purchase supplies for the school. He promises to keep us posted.

As you probably know, Dexter is the New York Times reporter Dexter Filkins, author of The Forever War. He is hard at work trying to raise funds and the global consciousness on behalf of Shamsia Hussein, the Afghan girl at the Mirwais School who was burned in an acid attack by the Taliban in Afghanistan – a child who had acid thrown on her just for attending school. We felt compelled to send money in February — and encourage you do, as well.

After receiving our check, Dexter wrote to us to say:

"You recently sent me a donation to help Shamsia Hussein and support the Mirwais School for Girls, where Shamsia and 1,500 other Afghan girls attend classes in very difficult circumstances. I have finally returned to the United States from Afghanistan and was able to open the many envelopes sent by people who wanted to help. I am happy to report that to date I have received 51 checks and one five-dollar bill, totaling $8,855. Incredible! On behalf of the girls at the Mirwais School in Afghanistan, and of Shamsia, thank you very much. I am sure they will be amazed and moved by your extraordinary generosity. I am a hard-bitten foreign correspondent, and I’m moved, too. I promise you I will spend your money wisely and humanely and make sure it does much good. The needs of the girls, as you can imagine, are basically bottomless."

To contribute to Dexter's efforts, email him: Filkins@nytimes.com.

March 25, 2009 — Gerda Lerner shined at EWG conference today

EXECUTIVE WOMEN IN GOVERNMENT (EWG) threw quite a bash today when they hosted their 2009 conference at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Among the highlights was a speech by the founder of Women's History Month, Gerda Lerner.

At 88, Gerda is an amazing, formidable embodiment of 20th century history. Armed with her ever-present cup of tea, she enthralled us with her stories of her early days as a prisoner in the Austrian jail, her experience with the McCarthy-era black list, women's activism, and more. Gerda has seen and survived it all and we were honored to listen as she shared her wisdom with the dynamic crowd of top women in government.

We felt honored to be able to bring her to the conference, and we thank our friends at Accenture for underwriting the purchase of Gerda's book, Living with History Making Social Change. Each attendee took home a copy - along with copies of the books by the other powerful women leaders who spoke that day:

• Diane MacEachern, author of Big Green Purse
• Rosemary O'Leary, author of The Collaborative Public Manager
• Carolyn Maloney, author of Rumors of Our Progress Have Been Greatly Exaggerated
• Nell Merlino, author of Stepping Out of Line

We also loved meeting the fabulously energetic and inspirational keynote speaker Vernice Armour, America's first African-American female combat pilot (www.vernicearmour.com). This event was filled with incredible networking opportunities, good conversations, and of course, great books. Learn more about EWG and be sure to sign up for next year's event: www.execwomeningov.org.

March 2, 2009 — “Animal Spirits” authors George Akerlof and Bob Shiller at the Greater Washington Board of Trade

More than 50 local executives tonight joined world-class economists George Akerlof and Robert Shiller, co-authors of the book “Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives the Economy, and Why it Matters for Global Capitalism.” The professors were invited to share their insights and ideas on the economy at the Greater Washington Board of Trade (pictured here with BOT president and CEO Jim Dinegar and Perry Hooks). Afterward they responded to questions about their forecasts on the future of the economy.

About the Authors: Akerlof is the Daniel E. Koshland Sr. Distinguished Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. He was awarded the 2001 Nobel Prize for Economics. Shiller is the best-selling author of “Irrational Exuberance” and “The Subprime Solution.” He is the Arthur M. Okun Professor of Economics at Yale University and the co-creator of the Case-Shiller index.

About the Book: The global financial crisis has made it painfully clear that powerful psychological forces are imperiling the wealth of nations today. From blind faith in ever-rising housing prices to plummeting confidence in capital markets, “animal spirits” are driving financial events worldwide. In this book, acclaimed economists George Akerlof and Robert Shiller challenge the economic wisdom that got us into this mess, and put forward a bold new vision that will transform economics and restore prosperity.

Akerlof and Shiller reassert the necessity of an active government role in economic policymaking by recovering the idea of animal spirits, a term John Maynard Keynes used to describe the gloom and despondence that led to the Great Depression and the changing psychology that accompanied recovery.

Like Keynes, Akerlof and Shiller know that managing these animal spirits requires the steady hand of government—simply allowing markets to work won’t do it. In rebuilding the case for a more robust, behaviorally informed Keynesianism, they detail the most pervasive effects of animal spirits in contemporary economic life—such as confidence, fear, bad faith, corruption, a concern for fairness, and the stories we tell ourselves about our economic fortunes—and show how Reaganomics, Thatcherism, and the rational expectations revolution failed to account for them.

Animal Spirits offers a road map for reversing the financial misfortunes besetting us today. Read it and learn how leaders can channel animal spirits—the powerful forces of human psychology that are afoot in the world economy today.

March 1, 2009 — 50th Birthday Bash Salon with Adam Gopnik, “Angels and Ages”

Famed New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik (pictured here with HBE owners Perry and Loretta), author of the new book, “Angels and Ages: A short book about Darwin, Lincoln, and Modern Life,” was the celebrity author who spoke tonight at our second Salon — a birthday bash book party!

The event was hosted by our good pal Marcia, who had a big birthday on February 12. She thought it was especially fitting that Adam come to speak about the two men also born on that day.

The birthday girl opened her home to nearly 100 people. Like us, she feels giving back is crucial and chose to have the event catered by New Course Catering, part of 3rd & Eats Restaurant, which provides culinary arts training to homeless and chronically unemployed individuals. For details visit: NewCourseCatering.com.

Hooks Book Events also donated a portion of the sale of Adam Gopnik’s book to Crossway Community, an entrepreneurial, non-profit organization run by Kathleen Guinan. “Our mission is to promote learning, creativity, and community for all families,” Kathleen says. For information visit www.crossway-community.org.

What the guests said:

Sunday’s event was the most intellectual experience I have had in a long time. Thanks so much for inviting me.

This was a Bohemian salon of deep thoughts and noble causes.

Adam’s knowledge and passion were incredibly impressive.

Many writers can write but are not good speakers — I was impressed with Adam’s ability to do both. When is the next salon?

To book your own Salon, send us an email: perry@hooksbookevents.com / loretta@hooksbookevents.com

About Adam Gopnik: A writer for The New Yorker since 1986, Adam is a three-time winner of the National Magazine Award for Essays and for Criticism and the George Polk Award for Magazine Reporting. From 1995 to 2000, he lived in Paris and now lives in New York City with his wife and children. About Angels and Ages: On a memorable day in human history, February 12, 1809, two babies were born an ocean apart: Abraham Lincoln in a one-room Kentucky log cabin; Charles Darwin on an English country estate. It was a time of backward-seeming notions, when almost everyone still accepted the biblical account of creation as the literal truth and authoritarianism as the most natural and viable social order. But by the time both men died, the world had changed: ordinary people understood that life on earth was a story of continuous evolution, and the Civil War had proved that a democracy could fight for principles and endure. And with these signal insights much else had changed besides. Together, Darwin and Lincoln had become midwives to the spirit of a new world, a new kind of hope and faith.

February 26, 2009 — Our first Salon!

We are happy to announce a new offering from Hooks Book Events — the Salon. We envision these to be intimate gatherings of friends who are thirsty for knowledge and want to hear the thoughts and ideas of some of the bestsellers who are launching their new books.

Refreshments are certainly part of the party, and often reflect the theme of the book. A case in point is our first Salon, when our friend Joy invited 50 of her closest friends to gather in her cottage office to hear the fabulous *Flora Fraser” (pictured left, with Perry) discuss her latest book on Pauline Bonaparte (Napoleon’s favorite sister). French wine and appetizers and a very intimate conversation about Pauline’s European escapades.

“The event was thoroughly engaging and enjoyable,” says Joy, who is dreaming up who she wants to have come for another Salon. “I was impressed not only by how elegant and articulate Flora is, but really enjoyed listening to my dearest friends ask smart, savvy questions of the author. I encourage everyone to host a Hooks Book Salon. It will open your mind and warm your heart.”

To book your own Salon, send us an email: perry@hooksbookevents.com / loretta@hooksbookevents.com

About Flora Fraser: The author of Beloved Emma: The Life of Emma, Lady Hamilton; The Unruly Queen: The Life of Queen Caroline; and Princesses: The Six Daughters of George III, Flora Fraser lives in London with her husband and three children. Her new book focuses on Napoleon’s favorite sister. Celebrated for her looks, notorious for her passions, immortalized by Antonio Canova’s statue, and always deeply loyal to her brother, Pauline Bonaparte Borghese is a fascinating figure in her own right. At the turn of the nineteenth century, she was considered by many to be the most beautiful woman in Europe. She shocked the continent with the boldness of her love affairs, her opulent wardrobe and jewels, and, most famously, her decision to pose nearly nude for Canova’s sculpture, which has been replicated in countless ways through the years.

February 19 — Grameen Foundation CEO Alex Counts speaks to Cornell alumns

A large group of Cornell University alumni had the opportunity to hear Alex Counts speak today about his book, Small Loans, Big Dreams: How Nobel Prize Winner Muhammad Yunus and Microfinance are Changing the World. Counts is the president and CEO of the Grameen Foundation, a nonprofit, Washington, D.C.–based organization that has grown from modest beginnings in 1997 to become a global network of forty-six microfinance partners in twenty-four countries. Under his leadership, the Grameen Foundation impacts an estimated eighteen million lives in Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the Arab World. Counts trained to be a catalyst for change under Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the founder and Managing Director of the Grameen Bank and corecipient of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.

"Micro-financing is considered one of the most effective strategies in the fight against global poverty," Counts explained to the group. "It can be implemented on the massive scale necessary to respond to the urgent needs of the world’s poorest. And now, in Small Loans, Big Changes, author Alex Counts looks at the lives of micro-lending borrowers from the Grameen Foundation in Bangladesh and Chicago."

All of the borrowers profiled in his book are women of little-to-no means, each struggling to gain financial independence. Counts help readers discover how, in Bangladesh, these women face off against very poor living conditions and the prejudice of men, while in Chicago, they must overcome crime and other hurdles that come with life in the inner city. "My goal was to reveal how Muhammad Yunus and his concept of micro-financing has helped those living in poverty achieve real financial independence," Counts shared.

What the crowd said:

I really enjoyed Alex's presentation--it was the primary reason I came. He was very inspiring.

I thought that the speaker was marvelous. The people who also were attracted to this type of event were also those that I was looking to connect with.

I have attended many alumni events. I thought this speaker was one of the best I have heard.

The speaker's presentation was informative and interesting to me — especially considering I am a recent grad who is interested in microfinance as a future career.

Alex was fabulous! Very interesting, engaging, informative, and inspirational! Many thanks to him and to all who worked to set up this great program.

As I am going back to Cornell as a Masters student in International Agriculture and Rural Development with a two-year Peace Corps option this topic was absolutely important for my thesis. I was happy to meet Alex and learn about his experiences in development. I flew down from New York just for this event!

Alex Counts recounts a great story of his interst in micro-finance and how he returned to Cornell to learn Bengali. Kudos to Cornell for having such an extensive language program.

January 28, 2009 — In Memory of John Updike

Hooks Book Events acknowledges the passing of John Updike with this offering, “Requiem,” from his forthcoming collection, “Endpoint and Other Poems,” as shared in today’s Opinion section of the New York Times.

Requiem, by John Updike
Were I to die, no one would say,
“Oh, what a shame! So young, so full
Of promise — depths unplumbable!”
Instead, a shrug and tearless eyes
Will greet my overdue demise;
The wide response will be, I know,
“I thought he died a while ago.”
For life’s a shabby subterfuge,
And death is real, and dark, and huge.
The shock of it will register
Nowhere but where it will occur.

January 20, 2009 — What is Barack Obama reading?

In his first book, “Dreams From My Father,” Barack Obama talks about how he has turned to books as a way of acquiring insights and information from others. Some of his favorites are by James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright and W. E. B. Du Bois. In college, he immersed himself in a spiritual-intellectual search and read the works of Nietzsche and St. Augustine.

What is he reading these days?

During a 60 Minutes interview in November Obama mentioned he’s reading two books about President Franklin Delano Roosevelt: Jonathan Alter’s “The Defining Moment: F.D.R’s Hundred Days,” and the Triumph of Hope, and Jean Edward Smith’s “FDR.”

The New York Times reported in May that he also was reading Doris Goodwin’s “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, and Fareed Zakaria’s “The Post-American World.”

And, here are some more titles Obama has read, according to McNally Jackson Books — a New York bookstore that opened in 2004 and describes itself as “a big, beautiful independent bookstore in New York’s Nolita, where Soho, Noho, the Lower East Side, Chinatown, and Little Italy meet (it’s also a stone’s throw from Tribeca, the East Village, West Village, and Wall Street…. Not to mention a quick subway ride from Brooklyn, a bike ride from Harlem, and a PATH fare from the great state of New Jersey). In other words, we’re right in the middle of the criss-crossing currents of New York’s eclectic cultural life and we’re determined to capture that invigorating swirl in our mix of books, media, and events.

How many of these Obama faves have you leafed through?
