May 28-31 Book Expo New York City!

Hooks Book Events staff is just back from a wonderful trip to New York to the annual Book Expo held this year at the Javits Center in NYC!

Imagine football fields back to back with filled books, books and more books. We arrived with our wonderful PR maven, Hope Gibbs of Inkadescent PR www.inkandescentpr.com who joined in the fun and chaos.

We brought our new “everyone needs one” book bags with the HBE logo this year. These zippered totes were all the rage with friends like Dan Pink and Jonathan Galassi, who quickly filled them with all the free books vendors were handing out.

We are home, feeling exhausted yet re-energzied about our love of the book, and the power of an idea and a good story. The hundreds of folks there from all over the world share this appreciation and we feel confident that regardless of the form these stories may take the concept of the book will live on.

Yes, the industry is changing. Yes, just like what we were hearing 10 years ago about the newspaper industry, it is possible that the book publishing world may be following suit.

But we also heard from some passionate editors and amazing writers whose new books we can not resist. So no matter what the future holds for this industry that we adore, we find it hard to imagine a world with no books to hold, to mark up, to lend, to return to share and to cherish.

So here’s to the book and to all the wonderful friends in our tribe who write them, edit them, package them, publicize them, sell them and read them! — Perry Pidgeon Hooks

Join Us on June 5 for a delicious event at Sweetgreen in Dupont Circle

Mark your calendar for June 5 at 5:30 when Bon Appetit magazine's editor-in-chief Barbara Fairchild, who will be signing her new book, Fast Easy Fresh at the fabulously delicious green bistro Sweetgreen (1512 Connecticut Ave., NW).

About Sweetgreen: The author is excited to be working with Sweetgreen co-owners Nicolas Jammet, Nathaniel Ru and Jonathan Neman, who opened the original restaurant in historic Georgetown in August 2007 after graduating from Georgetown University the previous May. Last April, the 23-year-old restaurateurs unveiled their second Sweetgreen location at 1512 Connecticut Avenue, NW and later that month opened a third location in Bethesda. Serving up organic cuisine using only sustainable practices from non-processed ingredients, being green for these eco-conscious lads extends into the restaurant's interior design and earth-friendly food containers — including ‘to go’ menus that are embedded with wildflowers for planting in the garden.

About the Author: Barbara Fairchild joined the staff of Bon Apetit in 1978 as an editorial assistant, and spent almost 15 years as executive editor before being promoted to editor-in-chief in 2000. She is a frequent guest on radio and television programs about food, restaurants, travel, and popular culture, and has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation’s “Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America.” She is also the author of the bestselling Bon Appétit Cookbook.

May 19 — Lee Woodruff Joined us at the Four Seasons

Hooks Book Events produced its first salon at the Four Seasons Hotel in
Georgetown this past week with our new best friend, Lee Woodruff. The author and activist who supports the troops through her nonprofit organization www.remind.org" charmed us with readings from her new book "Perfectly Imperfect" and with stories about her life with her children and husband, ABC News reporter Bob Woodruff, who suffered a severe brain injury in 2006 while covering the War in Iraq. "He's my miracle man," she said.

Approximately 75 women and one brave guy showed up for a yummy lunch and lots of laughs about motherhood, kids, husbands and more. Lee ended her talk discussing their family foundation which is dedicated to supporting the recovery efforts of our wounded soldiers.

Hooks Book Events was pleased to donate proceeds from the lunch to Remind. Memorial Day weekend is a perfect time for all of us to pitch in any way possible. Please visit www.remind.org"to learn more about this important organization, and if you feel inspired we encourage you to donate today.

May 3, 2009 -Congratulations to HBE Friend, Robin Chase

Kudos to HBE friend, Robin Chase who was recently listed with 99 other amazing folks in the TIME 100 list! Robin and our own Loretta were at Wellesley together and you may remember that Robin founded ZipCar! She has been seen recently dashing around DC (on the metro of course) talking to folks about her innovative ideas to solve some of our energy and transportation issues. We hope to get her as a guest speaker.. so keep watching the site for more information.

We particularly liked this FAST FACT from the TIME article:
Chase's formula: 1. Identify a need 2. Build a platform to share and satisfy the need

For more information on Robin and her work, visit her site: www.robinchase.org
