The all-star, all-author rock group Rock Bottom Remainders—featuring the likes of writers and authors Dave Barry, Amy Tan, Mitch Albom, Scott Turow, Roy Blount, Jr., Greg Iles, James McBride, Ridley Pearson and Kathi Kamen Goldmark—kicks off their 2010 Wordstock tour in Washington. The first event in DC is on Tuesday, April 20, at 8 pm, called “Besides the Music: a Conversation with the Rock Bottom Remainders,” hosted by veteran newsman Sam Donaldson (at Sidney Harman Hall in The Harman Center for the Arts Washington D.C. located at 610 F Street NW). The band performs on Wednesday, April 21, at 8:30 pm, at the 9:30 Club (located at 815 V Street, NW). Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Roger McGuinn, founder of the Byrds, will be a featured guest with the Rock Bottom Remainders at the 9:30 Club. Monies raised from these events go to some great non profits including some working in HAITI. This will be great fun with some wonderful writers and some music! Hope to see you there.

Hooks Book Events goes to Chicago!

Hooks Book Events dodged two snow storms to breeze in and out of the Windy City this week. The reason? We managed to get Judge Richard Posner and Professor Gary Becker in the same room at the Chicago HQ of the Securities and Exchange Commission. As you know, Posner and Becker have a very famous blog, http://uchicagolaw.typepad.com/beckerposner/ and are two cherished dare I say Rock Stars of American public intellectualism. Wearing sensible shoes and big smiles, the Judge and the Professor discussed a variety of topics from full body scans to Trans Fats.. yes they disagree on Trans Fats.. read the blog to find out why! You may also want to check out their jointly authored book based on the blog, Uncommon Sense to read more about topics where they agree and more interestingly where they disagree. It was an honor to be a part of this event. PPH

Recent Hooks Book Events! Check these out!

We've had a busy week! Hosting Andy McAfee for four events in two days discussing his new book Enterprise 2.0. Andy coined the phrase and gave us some great insights into the value of networks and connections. Bob Pozen charmed a crowd of 150 at the IMF discussing his treatise on the financial crisis, Too Big to Save. Bob will be back in DC again soon; meanwhile we are meeting with him in Boston to get ideas for HBE Boston. We closed the week with the amazing Meg Whitman (www.megwhitman.com); whose "bias for action" was evident in her discussion of The Power of Many her new book about her life and career as CEO of EBay! Meg is now running for Governor of California; keep your eyes on her.

HBE in NYC! One Degree Separated from Jon Stewart

Perry and Loretta headed off to NYC last week to visit our friends in the publishing world. With lots of new clients and a new Boston office we were excited to hear about some great new ideas and books for the spring. And while visiting our good friend DeeDee DiBartlo at William Morrow(publicist for Levitt and Dubner's SUPERFREAKONOMICS) we discovered that our HOOKS BOOK EVENTS book bags did actually end up on the DAILY SHOW with Jon Stewart! We had asked Levitt to please display on Jon's desk when he was on the show after our DC event with him. I like that! A man who takes direction well. Jon, look out, we may send you some more. PPH

December 3-Hooks Book Events Hosts Greg Mortenson-

Hooks Book Events and Politics and Prose were honored to host Greg Mortenson launching his new book, Stones Into Schools at the wonderful Sixth and I Synagogue in DC last week. Greg is truly an inspiration for many people including "Second Lady" Mrs. Biden and Tom Friedman who introduced Greg that evening. Mortenson and his amazing team of locals (including former Taliban fighters)have ventured into Afghanistan to build schools for girls. The book reads like an adventure novel;catch a great review in the New York Times December 10th. Tickets included a copy of the new book and a donation to the Central Asia Institute. www.ikat.org This book is a great holiday gift idea for the readers on your list.

Harvard Affirms What We Already Know!

Harvard Business Review
NOVEMBER 11, 2009

Women-Owned Firms Have
Huge Impact

U.S. businesses owned by women have an economic impact of $3 trillion annually. That translates into the creation or maintenance of 16% of all jobs in the country, according to the Center for Women's Business Research. If U.S.-based women-owned businesses were their own country, it would have the fifth-largest GDP in the world.

Well we could have told you that!

Just back from visiting our Boston colleague and had the real pleasure of being a guest lecturer at Emerson College. My good pal from Harvard Business School Press, Michelle Morgan invited me to come in and speak to her students about Hooks Book Events. Three hours later.. I had some new ideas for my business as well as few new booksellers to add to our growing Boston list.

Keep shopping with the ladies!
